Qualifying the Initiative Petition
58,000+ signatures needed by May 20th
The race to collect more than 58,000 signatures to qualify the Save Our Schools with Additional Funding for Salaries and Student Achievement Initiative Petition is on. The petition must qualify in Nevada’s 17 counties by May 20. In Clark County 41,000 signatures will be needed.

Retiree Subsidy Decision Favorable
Supreme Court Rules for Retirees
Last week the Nevada Supreme Court reversed the district court’s ruling which would have effectively closed access to the state retirement plan (PEBP) for current retirees from Clark County. The Supreme Court ruling also allowed access to the state health plan for those teachers retiring prior to November of 2008 in accordance with legislation passed in the 2007 session.

Early Transfer Period Just Around the Corner
Mark your calendars for February 11 through March 7
CCEA and CCSD have agreed to an Early Transfer Period that will allow teachers to apply to Title I and at-risk schools from February 11 through March 7, 2008. Teachers who transfer into one of these schools during the early transfer period shall be exempt from the usual two-year requirement provided in Article 35-2-C.

Governor Gibbons Turns His Back on Public Education

Nevada Governor Jim Gibbons does not have his priorities straight! Instead of protecting education, he is protecting legislation that would keep his “friends” happy. Despite his “Education First” initiative turned mandate, the education budget is far from closed. He has threatened to veto the budget if his areas of concern — which do not include education — are not addressed.

Major Cuts Proposed to FY08 Education Technology Budget
Your help is needed – act now!
The Bush Administration recently released its proposed FY08 Budget, which calls for the total elimination of critical education technology funding. Specifically, the Administration’s Proposed FY08 Budget would zero out the Enhancing Education Through Technology (EETT) program. Combined, the proposed FY08 budget cuts education technology by $290 million alone.

CCEA Technology Upgrade
Upgrades to provide greater reliability and uptime
Beginning Thursday, December 21st at 3:00PM and continuing through Tuesday, January 2nd at 8:00AM, CCEA will be performing significant upgrades to many systems. One of the greatest reasons for the upgrade is to provide CCEA staff with greater system reliability and more consistent system uptime. These changes in turn will allow for better service and support to our members.

STEP Continues Growth
Third Class of Juniors Begin Program
The Student to Teacher Enlistment Project (STEP) began the school year by adding a third class this year. This new class of juniors began the program in August bringing the number of participants in the program to 240 outstanding students who will be teaching in Clark County public schools in a few years.
